Introduction to Volume 2013

For researchers of the Tripillian culture the year 2013 is special. It is going to be 120-th anniversary since the discovery of the Tripillian culture by Vikenty Khvoika in the year 1893 during his excavations on the Kyrylivska Street in Kyiv.

At the same time the 1893 is rather symbolic because artifacts of Tripillian culture were researched in the 60-70-ties years of the eighteenth century and some information about Trypillian antiquities is found in private collections from the middle of the eighteen century. However, only after Vikentiy Khvoiko’s discovery it was destined for this culture to become common knowledge that brought new interest into study of this civilization of ancient farmers, which spread on lands between the Carpathians Mountains and the Dnieper river.

It was decided to have this year's edition of the magazine devoted more to the history of the discovery and the research. Also we will publish information about modern advances in the archaeological studies. We will uncover some mysteries of the Tripilllian World and talk about researchers whose efforts brought us knowledge of the distant past.

For these purposes we introduce four new sections to the magazine: "Expeditions", "Personnalia", "World at the Age of Tripillia" and "Museum". We hope that each of these new sections will find their authors as well as appreciative and interested readers.

The decade has passed since the last “round” anniversary in 2003. The past decade is marked by achieving new frontiers, especially in archaeological excavation and exploration. Growing interest in the study of Tripillian culture outside Ukraine is contributedto this success. Actually, the archaeology (and Trypilllian field is no exception) has been always the most productive and dynamically developed in the framework of international projects. Now to the funding of the field research in Ukraine were added participation from universities, research institutions and foundations in the UK, the U.S., the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland. This year the readers of this journal will find here very important and interesting results of the participation of the above international archaeological scientists. For example, we will publish the results of excavations in British-Ukrainian expedition of the Trypillian temple in village Nebelivka, the new maps of huge settlements in the area between the Southern Bug and Dnieper river, which were compiled by the magnetic survey of German-Ukrainian expedition, and many more.
